Blueberries in Abundance

For two years after planting blueberries, you must pull off each and every flower, so that all the plant’s energy can go towards growing strong roots.  For two springs, I stripped each blossom that so willingly would have become a plump berry, off every branch of my seven blueberry bushes. And last summer, I was rewarded with an abundance of blueberries, almost a gallon a day for the six-week season. I’m not sure that any prior delay of gratification in my life has ever been so richly rewarded.
